Preventing effects of joint contracture by high molecular weight hyaluronan injections in a rat immobilized knee model.

CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrated that HMWHA injections suppressed inflammatory, fibrotic, and hypoxic conditions observed in the immobilized joint capsule. PMID: 26097527 [PubMed - in process]

Authors: Droste R, Chatelain P, Drukker L, Sharma H, Papageorghiou AT, Noble JA Abstract Anatomical landmarks are a crucial prerequisite for many medical imaging tasks. Usually, the set of landmarks for a given task is predefined by experts. The landmark locations for a given image are then annotated manually or via machine learning methods trained on manual annotations. In this paper, in contrast, we present a method to automatically discover and localize anatomical landmarks in medical images. Specifically, we consider landmarks that attract the visual attention of humans, which we term visually salient landmarks...

Conclusions: Excellent accuracy was found for types 1A, 1B, and 3C deformities (ends of spectrum). There was more variation among surgeons in differentiating between one-column (types 2A and 2B) and two-column (types 3A and 3B) deficiencies, as surgeons often failed to recognize the radiological signs of posterior column failure. This failure to identify column deficiencies can potentially alter kyphosis management. There was excellent consensus among surgeons in the recommendation of type 2 osteotomy; however, some variation was observed in their choice for other osteotomies. This study reviews a single centre series of prospectively collected outcome measures to determine whether the Mobility performs better than the Scandinavian ankle replacement. The primary outcome measure was the survivorship. Secondary outcome measures consisted of complications and international scoring systems. 147 Scandinavian and 162 Mobility ankle replacements were reviewed at a mean follow up of 12.4 and 7.7 years respectively. The revision rate, which included liner exchange, component exchange or removal of implant was at 7 years 12.3% (18) for Scandinavian and 5.2% (8) for Mobility. The complication rate was 16.5...

Authors: Bund L, Tricard T, Alexis W, Schneider L, Karger C, Gicquel P Abstract Closed reduction and percutaneous osteosynthesis is an alternative to the open procedure for articular fractures of distal tibia of children. 38 patients were retrospectively reviewed. The measured parameters were : the score of Gleizes and the discrepancies between preoperative radiographic and CT scan measurements and postoperative radiographs. A significant correlation was found between the gap and the step-off in preoperative radiographic and CT scan. A significant decrease of the gap and step-off displacement was noticed after surg...

Authors: Behaeghe O, Van Beeck A, Dossche L, Somville J Abstract The aim of this study was to evaluate the inter- and intraobserver reliability of a CT-based femoral anteversion measurement. 17 CT scans showing an abnormal anteversion on one side were presented to 6. Three measurements of all scans were obtained : two bilateral measurements and a third measurement with a flipped CT scan. Interobserver correlation results using the spearman test for left, right and anteversion difference had a mean of respectively : 0.918, 0.760 and 0.757. Intraobserver correlation had a maximum of respectively : 0,99, 0,89 and 0,94...

Conclusion: H. pylori infection is closely associated with the serum level of CD47 in adults, suggesting that H. pylori may promote gastric cancer progression by activating CD47-mediated oncogenic pathways. PMID: 32493095 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Authors: Chi Y, Li C, Wu LH, Wang HH Abstract Background/Aims: Currently, the role of the microbiome GBA is being widely studied in the pathogenesis of visceral hypersensitivity in IBS. To investigate the role of fungus, the current study aimed to i) investigate the expression of Syk/CARD9-coupled Dectin-1 receptors in the ileocecal mucosa in D-IBS patients and (ii) explore the relationships between Dectin-1 and plasma MCT levels as well as anorectal sensory function in patients with D-IBS.Methods: Thirty-eight D-IBS patients who met the Rome III criteria and 2 groups of age- and sex-matched asymptomatic healthy co...
