In reply to comment on “Minimum detectable change in occlusal load – normative data for healthy and head and neck cancer populations”

Thank you for your interest in our paper comparing the minimum detectable occlusal load of healthy participants with patients who had received treatment for head and neck cancer. The letter raises two important issues, firstly the correlation between radiation dose to the masticatory apparatus and an individual ’s ability to detect occlusal load and secondly the effect of radiation dose on the dentition, and the likelihood of injury to the affected teeth. The authors also question whether the findings may prompt clinicians to avoid trismus treatment leading to an adverse effect on quality of life.
