Introduction: First- and second-degree perineal tears occur in 22.8% of women giving birth, while third- and fourth-degree tears in 1.8-5.9% of cases. During the first day after a vaginal delivery, perineal pain occurs in more than 95% of women who have had an episiotomy, or first- or second-degree perineal tear.
