Cytokine responses in Chlamydia pneumoniae-stimulated PBMC in asthmatic and non-asthmatic subjects.
Chlamydia pneumoniae (C. pneumoniae) is a gram-negative intracellular bacterium that causes respiratory infections in humans, including asthmatic and non-asthmatic subjects. C. pneumoniae activates cells in vitro and produces cytokines that may contribute to inflammatory responses observed in asthma. Activation of cell-mediated immune (CMI) responses is important for protective immunity; these responses may be impaired in patients with asthma. The aim of this study sought to compare cytokine responses between subjects with or without asthma.
