Seroconversion to 23 Valent Pneumococcal Polysaccharide Vaccination in Children with Type 1 Diabetes
People with diabetes are at higher risk of severe pneumococcal infections, and half of school-age children with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1DM) are colonized with Streptococcus pneumoniae, with reduced antibody response to T-cell dependent antigens suspected.1-5 23 Valent Pneumococcal Polysaccharide Vaccine (PPSV23) is recommended for children with T1DM, yet the response to vaccination is not well-characterized.6 We hypothesized that children with T1DM would have suboptimal immunological response to PPSV23 as assessed by IgG change, with lower age of patient and poor glycemic control associated with impaired response.
