The strange case of the “flesh-like” disease

Sarcoidosis is a multisystem inflammatory disorder of unknown aetiology characterized by the presence of T lymphocytes, mononuclear cells, and non-caseating granulomas in diseased tissues. The first description of the disease, in 1878, is attributed to Sir Jonathan Hutchinson (1828 –1913), surgeon and president of the Royal College of Surgeons: he described the strange case of a 58 years old policeman “with dark patches of dark purplish color on the extremities…..who…finally died of contracted kidneys” (1).
