Mentorship continues to be widely recognized as a vital component of personal growth and professional development in medicine. However, mentorship alone cannot guarantee that physicians will gain the exposure and experiences necessary for academic promotion.1 This is particularly true for women and underrepresented minorities in medicine.2 Sponsorship, in contrast, provides access to high-visibility opportunities critical to career advancement.1 The path to career success requires both an effective mentor and a sponsor.
