17. The Intensity and Ordering of Experiences of Intimate Partner Violence Within Adolescent Romantic Relationships

While surveillance studies show that intimate partner violence (IPV) is highly prevalent among adolescents and young adults (AYA) in the United States, we do not clearly understand the frequency or patterns of IPV within AYA relationships. Experiencing IPV increases the risk of short- and long-term adverse mental, behavioral, and physical health outcomes. An improved understanding of how frequently episodes of physical and emotional violence occur, whether physical and emotional violence co-occur, or one generally precedes the other is necessary to enhance AYA IPV prevention interventions as well as support to survivors.
