In the US, classroom sex education is often the only resource for children and adolescents to explore concepts about body changes in puberty, healthy relationships, sexual orientation, and gender identity (SOGI). It is mandated in 39 states and the content is highly variable. In the state of Hawai ʻi, sex and HIV education are mandated. The content is medically and age-appropriate and must include contraception, condoms, abstinence, healthy relationships, sexual decision-making, self-discipline, dating, and sexual violence prevention topics found in comprehensive sexuality education (CSE).
