A gold mine of information from a deep dive into the liver transcriptome

Understanding the changes in hepatic metabolic pathways in response to drugs and dietary changes has been an important long-term goal. A comprehensive functional understanding requires identification of the proteomic and enzymatic changes in hundreds of biochemical reactions which is a daunting and currently technically unattainable task. However, quantification of changes in the RNA pool is much more practical, and due to the strict hierarchical organization of DNA being a template for RNA, and RNA being a template for protein; changes in RNA may correlate with protein levels and function.
