Unseen steroids, seen risks: Skin-Cap still contains high-potency glucocorticosteroids 26 years after global scandal
To the Editor: Skin-Cap spray (formerly Cheminova Laboratories International; now Chemigroup France) is an over-the-counter medication for psoriasis and other dermatoses. According to the manufacturer's statement, the active ingredient is zinc pyrithione. However, from 1997 to 2005, the presence of high-potency glucocorticosteroids, specifically clobetasol propionate and betamethasone propionate, was detected in Skin-Cap's composition.1,2 This evidence prompted the recall of Skin-Cap in the United States, Canada, and several European countries.
