The Important Role of Hemispherotomy for Rasmussen Encephalitis: Clinical and Functional Outcomes

Rasmussen encephalitis (RE) is characterized by pharmacoresistant epilepsy and progressive neurological deficits concurrent with unilateral hemispheric atrophy. Evidence of an inflammatory autoimmune process has been extensively described in the literature; however, the precise etiology of RE is still unknown. Despite data supporting a beneficial effect of early immunosuppressive and immunomodulatory interventions, surgical disconnection of the affected hemisphere is considered the treatment of choice for these patients.
