Does whole body measured splanchnic extraction of amino acids with stable isotopes tracers in the prandial state represent tracee splanchnic extraction?

Rationale: Establishing the metabolic fate of nutrients coming from food intake is critical for the interpretation of the benefits of a food intervention. With a combination of enteral and parenteral administration of tracer stable isotopes like L-phenylalanine (Phe) during feeding, first-pass tracer splanchnic extraction (SPE) of that amino acid can be determined on a whole body level (WbSPE). Tracer WbSPE is often suggested to relate to the tracee SPE, but conducting invasive studies across the human splanchnic area to confirm this is difficult.
