R & D Expenditures at U.S. Universities Increased by $ 8 Billion in FY 2022

Academic institutions spent $ 97.8 billion on R&D in FY 2022, an increase of $ 8.0 billion in current dollars from FY 2021. Federal sources funded almost $ 54 billion ( 55 % ) of the total and accounted for $ 4.9 billion of the year-over-year increase. Academic R&D expenditures in all science fields combined increased by $ 5.9 billion ( 8.4 % ) in FY 2022. The data in this report are from the Higher Education Research and Development ( HERD ) Survey, sponsored by the National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics ( NCSES ) within the National Science Foundation.
