Application of a deep learning system to detect papilledema on nonmydriatic ocular fundus photographs in an emergency department
Detection of ocular fundus abnormalities, including even those limited to the optic nerve head, remains very challenging for non-eye care providers, the vast majority of whom are not comfortable with direct ophthalmoscopy, especially through a non-dilated pupil.1-6 Pathology of the optic nerve, in particular papilledema (optic disc edema specifically secondary to intracranial hypertension), often reflects an underlying sight- or life-threatening disorder which will likely be missed without ocular fundus examination.
