Antimicrobial Stewardship: Reflections and the Road Ahead

Antimicrobial Stewardship existed long before its coined terminology. Yet, since the last issue of Infectious Disease Clinics of North America focused on antimicrobial stewardship nearly a decade ago, the field has undergone exponential growth due to heightened awareness of antimicrobial use and antimicrobial-associated adverse effects, and the continued emergence of multidrug-resistant organisms. In addition, health care and public health governing bodies in the United States have significantly contributed to antimicrobial stewardship growth and awareness through development of detailed guidance around antimicrobial stewardship program structure and implementation, regulatory mandates, and enhanced regulatory requirements emphasizing formalized stewardship programs.
