13.3 “It’s No Water Park but at Least It’s Not School”—Wading Through School Transitions With Teens, Hospitals, and Schools

An advantage of partial hospital programs is that they keep kids in the least restrictive home environment, thus positioning them for daily work within the family system. However, a primary barrier identified by families and schools is prolonged absence from school. Given the rise in school avoidance since the pandemic, attention must be paid to how to most effectively coordinate with schools during the admissions process, during the transition back to school, and after discharge from a partial hospitalization level of care.
