Brain and Serum Glucose Homeostasis during Therapuetic Hypothermia in HIE

Therapeutic hypothermia is now recommended as standard therapy for infants with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy. However, there remains considerable uncertainty about many aspects of this treatment, including the relationships between brain injury, brain energy supply, and concentrations of glucose, the major brain energy source, in the blood. Because both high and low blood glucose concentrations have been linked to worse outcomes, understanding these relationships may be important to optimise brain energy balance and prevent additional damage.
