Thoracic epidural analgesia versus wound catheter plus intra-thecal opiate for open liver resections as part of a comprehensive ERAS pathway.

Background: Thoracic epidurals have long been the gold standard for post-operative pain relief, but with concerns of side effects such as hypotension and reduced mobility, there has been a recent move away from them in favour of trunk blocks. We have recently introduced wound catheters and intra-thecal opiate as part of our well-established ERAS pathway. We sought to evaluate the efficacy of this technique.
