4. Computerized tomography Hounsfield Units measurements can reliably predict proximal junctional kyphosis in adult spinal deformity patients with long constructs

Several studies have examined the relationship between low  computerized tomography Hounsfield units (CTHU) and postoperative complications in adult spinal deformity (ASD) surgery. Low CTHU, specifically scores below 159, at the upper instrumented vertebra (UIV) and UIV+1 have been shown to increase the likelihood to develop proximal junction kyphosis (PJ K), pseudarthrosis, and pedicle screw loosening. In contrast, greater CTHU values have been associated with greater osteologic fusion potential at 1-year follow-up.
