Stigma related to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) has been reported in the literature for three decades since Kaptein et al.1 reported positive relationships between stigma and respiratory symptoms while assessing various aspects of the quality of life in people with chronic non-specific lung diseases. Perceived stigma, shame, guilt, and blame were studied separately or in combination with psychosocial outcomes and quality of life.2,3 Yet, compared to other stigma-related conditions, such as HIV or mental illness, COPD-related stigma experiences have received little attention.
