Evaluation of two- and three-dimensional anatomic parameters of C-shaped root canals with cone beam computed tomography, microCT, and nanoCT

Studies of internal dental anatomy using diagnostic imaging methods have increased our understanding of the influence of areas with anatomical challenges such as flattening, curvatures, lateral and accessory canals, apical deltas, isthmuses, and C-shaped root canals.1-5 They have also aided endodontic diagnosis and treatment planning. The C-shaped root canal system is an anatomical variation that occurs in approximately 3.5 – 8.5% of mandibular second molars6, 7 and is particularly common in populations of Asian descent (39 - 45%).
