Genicular artery embolization versus sham embolization for symptomatic osteoarthritis of the knee.

Purpose: Genicular artery embolization is a novel minimally invasive procedure used to alleviate pain in patients with symptomatic knee osteoarthritis. The target of this treatment is peri-genicular angiogenesis, which has been stated to be a contributor to KOA pain. The aim of GAE is to reduce blood flow to the hyperaemic synovium through embolization and subsequently reduce synovitis and the pain it produces. Multiple cohort studies have shown promising results, however, data from a randomized controlled trial is lacking.
