The Protective Role of Family Mealtime in Anorexia Nervosa

We read the article by Razenhofer et  al. [1] concerning the onset and duration of disordered eating prior to diagnosis in patients with anorexia nervosa (AN) and its concordance with parental reports with great interest. An important result of the study was that dieting reported by the patient was present for about a year and a half before diagnosis. When we compare this result to a recent study from our clinic, we found that from the onset of dieting to diagnosis, the duration was much shorter at 5.4 ± 4.8 (min-max:1–24) months in 38 patients diagnosed with AN (unpublished data).
