Biopsychosocial factors associated with pain severity and hand disability in trapeziometacarpal osteoarthritis and non-surgical management

Trapeziometacarpal osteoarthritis (TMO) is one of the most prevalent and painful forms of hand osteoarthritis (OA).1-3 It can limit thumb mobility, hand function, and quality of life (QoL).1-6 Radiographic TMO — that is the pathology is confirmed by radiographic evidence —is nearly universal with age:>90% of Americans aged ≥80 years have this pathology.7,8 However, symptomatic TMO — that is the pathology is confirmed by clinical symptoms such as pain—is much less prevalent (5%-30%) for the same age group.
