Undergraduate and graduate medical and dental education has undergone a transformation since its dawn in the early twentieth century, transitioning from a proprietary apprenticeship model toward a more robust framework based on basic science, research, and hands-on patient care in academic health center arenas. This traditional Halsteadian model laid the foundation for a formal approach to education that forms the algorithms that educators now follow with an emphasis on evidence-based best practices in patient care.
