Improved survival in intensive care unit in severe COVID-19 associated with amantadine use - retrospective study

The first reports on the possible uses of amantadine were published as early as 1960s (Monto and Arden,  1992). Following initial reports on antiviral properties described in 1963, amantadine obtained approval for prophylaxis and treatment of influenza type A viruses infections in 1976 (Hubsher et al., 2012); however, in the following decades it was withdrawn from influenza's treatment recommendatio ns due to universal viral protein M2 resistance (Influenza Antiviral Drug Resistance, 2021).
