Businesses Spent Over a Half Trillion Dollars for R & D Performance in the United States During 2020, a 9.1 % Increase Over 2019

Businesses spent $ 538 billion on R&D performance in 2020, with $ 466 billion of funding from companies ’ own sources and $ 71 billion from other sources. These amounts follow a 2-year period of double-digit annual growth in the level of national domestic R&D performance, and this robust performance seems likely to continue, based on the large increase in funding that companies planned to spend from their own funds for domestic R&D performance in 2021. Data were based on the Business Enterprise Research and Development Survey ( BERD ) , cosponsored by the National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics within the National Science Foundation and by the Census Bureau.
