Interventional Endoscopy Has Changed Practice in Inflammatory Bowel Disease

The first decades of the twenty-first century have seen tremendous progress in the management of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Medical and surgical treatments have both advanced, but with a foot in both these specialties, interventional endoscopists have established a major role in the treatment of IBD complications. Endoscopic therapy has been applied in particular to strictures associated with Crohn disease, ulcerative colitis, and postoperative anastomosis. Fistulas and abscesses have also been successfully managed in many cases, avoiding more invasive surgery.
