A systematic review of registered nurse turnover and retention in the United States

The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the dedication of health care professionals and brought attention to workforce issues such as high job demands, burnout, and turnover. A recent survey of registered nurses (RNs) indicated that 23% intended to leave their position and 29% were considering leaving their current position within the next 6 months (American  Nurses Foundation, 2022). These issues cannot be solely attributed to the pandemic, as many studies of RNs prior to COVID-19 examined relationships between job experiences, burnout, and decisions to stay in or leave a job.
