How psych applicants evaluate residency programs
Greetings from my second post in a single night! I was looking over the criteria that psych applicants used to choose which programs to apply to: And I'm wondering how applicants evaluated a couple of different qualities: "Quality of educational training and curriculum" Beyond a prestigious name, how can you evaluate this? What relevant information should I look for on their website, and what questions should I ask residents? "Appropriate balance between... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

etiquette for various audition rotation finagling
So I've been rejected for an away rotation at a program I really wanted and now I have questions: Would it be worth it to reach out to the program coordinator to ask for feedback on my application? Criteria they wanted that maybe I could optimize come ERAS time? Can I go back into VSLO and apply to different rotations? For example, if I was rejected from their inpatient sub-internship but they had a million other psych electives posted As a follow-up, can a... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Stimulant/Naltrexone for Weight
I've had some patients that benefitted from bupropion/naltrexone for weight loss. I got to wondering about my ADHD patients that are on methylphenidate or amphetamine (but not bupropion) if adding naltrexone to their regimen would be helpful for weight loss. Does anyone have experience with, or thoughts about, this? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Weird case. Treatment Resistant Depression but after a snake bite
Got a patient that was already seen by a great clinician and she couldn't get this patient better. Was tried on all the conventional meds. A few SSRIs, SNRIs, Lamotrigine, Lithium, atypical antipsychotics (and yes the better ones for depression such as Aripiprazole, Cariprazine) , Bupropion, augmentation agents such as Buspirone, Auvelity, Esketamine, TMS (not ECT...yet). After several meetings she finally said something that hit me like a ton of bricks. She told me she never had mental... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Bupropion and adult ADHD
I have a few adult patients in my practice with ADHD: I try to be very thougthful when giving this diagnosis, often interviewing other family members, more than 1 visit, standarized tests and such. These patients often have comorbid anxiety or depression, and when that is the case, I usually choose bupropion to try and treat more than 1 condition with just 1 drug. I've read the literature (Comparative efficacy and tolerability of medications for attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder in... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Long term use of antidepressants/bupropion
I am about to enter psychiatry residency so I still don't know much about the practice of psychiatry. I was wondering if there is any disadvantages of long term (more than 5+ years) administration of antidepressants such as bupropion. Should we seek to taper off the antidepressants if the psychosocial factors have been signifcantly improved in the last few years (and the patient has been feeling and functioning well) -- or should we choose to continue if the patient is doing well without... Does resolution authorship count as publication for residency apps?
Hi y'all, I was told that authorship of a resolution that is passed/adopted by a state and/or national medical association can count as a publication for residency applications--is this true? If so, how is this viewed by residencies compared to an actual peer-reviewed journal article or a poster? Thanks! (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Quick question--DEA Schedules
Hi y'all, med student here! Quick question--school recently started back and we covered DEA schedules in my pharm class. I had always assumed that benzos generally would be schedule II drugs alongside amphetamine and opioids. I was really surprised that benzos are schedule IV as this does not match my perception of the extent and consequences of their misuse. I did a quick Google search and there doesn't seem to be much transparency regarding DEA scheduling. I'd be interested to hear your... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

What's the deal with "Auvelity"? (new NMDA receptor antagonist)
Got a notification that some biotech stock shot up about 35% today. Turns out that company just got FDA approval for "auvelity" and is marketing it as the greatest thing to come out for depression treatment since SSRIs. Looking into it the chemical formulation seems to be "dextromethorphan HBr -bupropion HCl", and it has been challenging finding peer reviewed articles about how well it really works. Perhaps I'm just too dumb to understand the pharmacology behind it, but isn't this... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Cerebral but make it ketamine??
I just got an ad for this company on Instagram with tons of clients raving about their experience in the comments: Mindbloom | Psychedelic Medicine is Here Mindbloom helps you heal and grow through legal, safe, and clinician-guided ketamine therapy for depression and anxiety. See if you're a candidate today. www.mindbloom.com I had no idea that at-home ketamine therapy was even legal but I looked it up and was really surprised by how little regulation there is. This service is...

Off-label treatments for meth-use disorder
Hi y'all, potentially very naive medical student question incoming: Background is that I'm from California and worked at a residential mh facility/community psychiatry program for a little over 3 years before starting medical school. Meth addiction is/was devastating to this population and posed tremendous barriers to recovery. Treating SMI within the context of active meth addiction felt essentially,, farcical and, anecdotally, I saw that meth addiction had much poorer outcomes in rehab... Exactly how big a deal is failing a course?
Welp, in case you couldn't guess from the title, I just failed a course. I'll be able to retake it over the summer which will "fix" my GPA, but the F will stay on my transcript. I always hear that, unless you want derm or something extra competitive, GPA doesn't matter when applying to residency. What about Fs on a transcript? Is it true that residency programs will filter out applicants who have failed a course? If so, how common is this practice? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Anorgasmia Treatments?
Looking for some input from the hive mind here. 33yo with schizophrenia. Had him on inpt for about 4 months before he was finally stabilised on Abilify Maintena 400mg and olanzapine 10mg. But he’s had Anorgasmia since being on the meds. Not sure which one did it as he came to me on both. No erectile difficulties, he just can’t finish. I tried bupropion and mirtazapine, no effect. Right now I’ve left him on trazodone 50mg qhs and amantadine 100mg BID (amantadine to counteract D2 blockade... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

APA Annual Meeting--Rising OMS-II
Hi everyone, thanks for the great stuff y'all share here! I follow this forum really closely and love learning from y'all. I got a scholarship from my school to travel to the APA Annual Meeting in Nola this May. I was wondering what advice you might have for a rising 2nd year med student to make the most out of this experience. For reference, I am dead set on psychiatry, have about 4 years of experience working with dual diagnosis populations as well as research and volunteer experiences...
