The geriatric medicine workforce 2022
This report examines data collected by the Royal College of Physicians (RCP) on the consultant and Higher Specialty Trainee geriatric medicine workforce. This data, which was collected between 2019 and 2021 as part of the RCP ’s annual workforce census, demonstrates the staffing challenges facing older people’s healthcare. Despite the growth in medical student places, there are not enough specialist healthcare professionals being trained and retained to meet the needs of the population as it ages.ReportPress release  (Source: Health Management Specialist Library)

Sunday Sermonette: More names
Chapter 3 gives us the purported lineage of the kings of Judah (or the united Kingdom prior to the breakup) starting with David. It is consistent with the Deuteronomist history, but verses 17 et seq go on to  list descendants in the exilic and post-exilic period. Of course, only sons are listed, and the sons of concubines also excluded. Note that the genealogy in the Gospel of Matthew follows this, but omits four generations, apparently in order to get to the magic number 14. Solomon had 700 wives but only one son. Anyway, honestly, who cares?3 These are the sons of David that were born to him in Hebron: the firs...

Chile and Latin America ’s Disposable Constitutions
Ian V ásquezChile votes this Sunday on a proposed, new constitution. It is a far-left document that would undermine fundamental rights and impoverish the country. Chileans should reject it. My colleagues and I have discussed the Chilean success story under the current constitution, the political conditions that gave rise to a constitutional convention that began meeting last year, and the problems with the proposed basic charterhere, here, here, here, andhere. In light of Chile ’s referendum, I reprint below a rough translation of anarticle I published in Peru in 2019 about Latin America ’s sorry tradition of frequently r...

Let ’ s twist again with the Garden Rose Tortrix
Having written about one of the bigger moths we see in the UK, Connie, the migrant Convolvulus Hawk-moth, it only seems fair to give a mention to a micro, as opposed to macro moth. So, here’s the Garden Rose Tortrix. Garden Rose Tortrix Now, the macro versus micro label may well have been historically about size. The larger moths being macro, the smaller moths being micro, as you might imagine, but there are so many enormous micro moths and so many tiny macro moths in the world that this really doesn’t hold. In fact, the division is one of evolutionary history, the micro moths being a much older grouping. The m...

Amazon ’ s Coitus Interruptus: In or out?
Each week I’ve been adding a brief tidbits section to the THCB Reader, our weekly newsletter that summarizes the best of THCB that week (Sign up here!). Then I had the brainwave to add them to the blog. They’re short and usually not too sweet! –Matthew Holt Meanwhile, it’s time for Matthew’s tidbits and of course given their recent news-making I am going to focus on Amazon in health care. The news is of course that they are in health care in a big way, buying One Medical. The news is also of course is that they are out–shutting down Amazon Care. This reminds me of the famous criticism delivere...

In this study, researchers gathered a diverse group of participants; 43 percent were Black, and 68 percent were women. They also considered factors such as age and insurance status when drawing conclusions. The study occurred through a clinical trial, where all participants were randomly assigned to have their next visit occur through either phone or video-based platforms. The central unit of measurement was visit satisfaction rate, reported on a ten-point scale. Researchers noted noninferiority data based on whether patient satisfaction between the telehealth methods exceeded a -15 percent margin.-----https://www.theverge....

August 25, 2022 Edition-----The big story this week has been the multiple PM story in Australia with ScoMo. What an amazing saga!In the UK there seems to be an impending collapse of the economy coming unless some-one takes some really smart steps real soon now.Relatively the US has seemed pretty calm this week – just waiting for an impending recession – along with China and Europe.Fair to say things globally are pretty messy!-----Major Issues.-----https://www.afr.com/markets/equity-markets/every-investing-trend-misfires-as-stock-bears-are-crushed-20220814-p5b9o2Every investing trend misfires as stock bears are crushedD...

Bureaucracy busting concordat: principles to reduce unnecessary bureaucracy and administrative burdens on general practice
Department of Health and Social Care - The government made a public commitment as part of the2020 to 2021 GP contract update to jointly review bureaucracy in general practice with NHS England. The intention of the review was to reduce the burden on general practitioners and primary care teams, releasing more time to focus on patient care. The concordat is a complementary piece of work to the review and outlines seven principles to help reduce unnecessary bureaucracy and administrative burdens in general practice. It was developed with the input of stakeholders including the British Medical Association (BMA) and Royal...

The Macro View – Health, Economics, and Politics and the Big Picture. What I Am Watching Here And Abroad.
August 18, 2022 Edition-----The main issue, probably of the year, is the increasing tension across the Taiwan Strait with all sorts of worries about how conflict can be avoided and prosperity maintained at a reasonable level as tensions continue. And hopefully ease. The impact of climate change in Europe is really becoming obvious and worrying. I am not sure just how a realistic response is possible in any reasonable time.In OZ the PM has come back after a week off to have the Chinese Ambassador tell us we are a vassal and to just shut up and behave. Protectionism Is Frittering Away Defense Dollars
Colin GrabowLast year Rep. Rob Wittman (R ‑Virginia)introduced an amendment to address, of all things, the military ’s procurement of anchors and mooring chains. Currently, these items canonly be purchased from member countries of theNational Technology and Industrial Base comprising the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, and Canada. Rep. Wittman ’samendment would have allowed them to also be purchased frommajor non ‐NATO allies, including shipbuilding powerhouse South Korea.Today there is just one U.S. manufacturer, Lister Chain and Forge, that produces anchors and mooring chains for the military. How Common Has Private Currency Been?
Lawrence H. WhiteRecently, an investment advisor and Bitcoin proponenttweeted the claim that “[f]or most of human history” the “[s]eparation of money and state was the norm, even if the state stamped their ruler’s face on the coin.” Some strong disagreement (and some strong support) followed the tweet. The mostcategorical criticism asserted: “Money is and always has been a creation of government. ” A somewhat milder challenge asserted that “Private moneys have seldom been main media of exchange.”First, let ’s clarify the object of the discussion. If we define “money” the way that economist...

Poignant moments in History of cardiology : James Mackenzie ’ s dying heart !
1908, Going back on the time machine, more than 100 years ago, world war I was all set to begin, and the great Titanic was being built in the Belfast shipyard. A parallel histroy is being created in cardiology. This is a brief story of Dr. James Mackenzie, a general practitioner from a remote Scottish village who ended up with the title of the father of British cardiology. Dr. Harvey might have invented circulation, but it was Mackenzie who taught the science of arterial pulse and wrote a classic on the topic to the new medical world. He was able to decode the secrets of the jugular venous pulse as well and diagnosed va...
