I need help!
my niece is in a graduate course as a counselor in which a midwife was brought in to "educate" the class on midwifery. My niece, being an intelligent individual, saw straight through the midwifes bullsh*t. Now she is asking me for some data to present to her class. This midwife repeatedly bashed hospitals and doctors. She also blamed epidurals for failure to breastfeed and substance abuse in later life. Wtf, substance abuse in later life? Now that's even new to me. I'm going to arm my... I need help! (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Do you do much as an addiction psychiatrist?
I write this not to be disparaging, but just because I am a clueless intern with little experience. A little background: One of our rotations as interns (probably the best, in terms of hours certainly, but also cool attendings) is at the VA substance abuse program. It's basically an intensive outpatient program that meets within the hospital. Anyway, besides prescribing some naltrexone or methadone, I didn't really see us doing much. I mean, sure, we'll talk to the patients and see them... Do you do much as an addiction psychiatrist? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Harvard MPH 2017
Figured I'd start this thread since acceptances are rolling in. I'm going to attend the 45-credit epidemiology program. I'm primarily interested in mental health and substance abuse, and I'd like to have a research career. I'm really curious to hear about other people's interests, goals, concerns, etc. My only concern is the cost. Other than that I'm super psyched. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Substance abuse recovery applicants
Just floating this out there for any prospective applicants- I applied for professional studies at around 5 years of sobriety. I'm currently a first year student. I perused this forum sending messages to others who navigated this process with, at the very least, a spotty academic record from that time. If anyone is looking for advice or has questions, please feel to PM or post on this thread. The long story short is- you can still achieve this dream despite whatever past you may have. All... Too many Options
I am a non-working post-bachelor student. I majored in Psychology for my undergraduate degree. I am interested in Mental Health Counseling, Addiction/Substance Abuse Counseling, Art Therapy, Animal Therapy I have taken courses or gotten some experience in those areas. Is there a Masters degree that I should get where I can do all, or at least part of these fields? Thanks in advance. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Red Flag Alert: I've been arrested twice for underage drinking (1st was dismissed, 2nd convicted). Currently going to substance abuse counseling and AA meetings for court/probation, so hopefully that is enough for adcoms to see this as a resolved issue? Year in school: Academic senior at top 30 university (Graduating this spring in three years, taking a gap year) Residence: VA Schools to which you are applying: All in-state, George Washington, Georgetown, Stony... 3.5 GPA, 521 MCAT, also arrested twice for underage drinking...WAMC (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Statistics about Pharmacists - Suicide, Drug Abuse, and other rates?
Hey guys, I was talking to a girl a few months ago and she mentioned that pharmacists surpassed dentists in the rate of suicide. Any idea where I can find this information? I would also interested in finding information regarding drug/alcohol abuse. Apparently, we live a just-so-slightly stressful life. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Call it marijuana....don't call it medicine
I continue to be appalled at the attitudes about marijuana use and its perception as a legitimate form of medicine. I have read the "studies" and to say this is a proven therapy that is more effective than conventional treatments is laughable. I cannot believe some medical societies have endorsed this and I feel it has only clouded the publics' perception of marijuana as a true drug of abuse. If you look at the history of the medical marijuana movement it has a foundation in the... Call it marijuana....don't call it medicine (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Study drugs in med school
Do people abuse study drugs like amphetamine and modafinil a lot in medical school? People used to use these drugs a lot in my undergrad, without prescriptions, to gain an advantage on exams. Personally, I think it's hugely unfair unless you have a legitimate medical need (though, let's be real, ADD is hugely overdiagnosed in America)...So, what do you think? How common is it at your school, and how do you feel about it? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

How do pharmacists lose their license?
Obviously drug diversion/drug abuse/insurance fraud/fatal errors... but is it common for pharmacists to lose their license or get into trouble over other reasons? I understand that a lot of this is state specific but I see some pharmacists who really make their life a lot harder than it needs to be by calling on stupid things such as switching inhalers, switching 2 25mg tabs for 1 50mg tab... etc. I'm just kind of torn by the different "styles"...heck I've even seen ppl switch scripts from... Debating if I should apply
hello, I am defiantly not a traditional pre med student and I am debating if I should even bother applying. I am 30 years old and have 1 more year of undergrad left. By the time I complete my undergrad I will have been to three different universities off and on for 8 years. I know this previous statement alone should tell me I have no chance but, a girl can dream. When I first started school I was 23 and working in bars until 4 or 5 am. During this time I had a substance abuse problem. So,... Debating if I should apply (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Should med school applicants be required to disclose past psychiatric/psychological issues?
Given that various psychiatric and psychological issues (namely bipolar, chronic depression, drug/alcohol abuse, etc.) become serious, prevalent issues in the field of medicine, should med school applicants be required to disclose such issues (i.e., those that would not already be required to be disclosed as a part of an institutional action or misdemeanor/felony)? Clearly, past instances of these issues present added risk factors for patients that can be avoided by eliminating or reducing... Columbia Post-Bac Pre-Med
Hi there, this is my first post on here. I graduated in 2012 with a bachelors in English literature (GPA of 3.5) from a state school in Washington. I completed an associates degree (GPA 0f 2.7, yikes) before transferring. Since graduating I worked in Spain as a teaching assistant for a year and am now fluent in Spanish. I decided teaching wasn't for me and changed to technical writing. I come from a low income family with substance abuse problems. This is a major reason why my grades... Addressing Prior Substance Abuse & Treatment as an Applicant
Good Evening SDN, I am opening this thread with intention to hopefully obtain a number of opinions & create a place for open discussion/feedback regarding views of early substance abuse, addiction & treatment history in a pre-medical applicant. Physicians, as privelidged providers are expected to embody a certain degree of astutness & moral integrity (and rightfully so). Their occupation, albeit inately intertwined with the sciences, is firmly grounded in altruistic beliefs & the selfless... My chances of getting into Medical School w/ 2 Class C Misd.
by CaribMD (Posted Mon May 18, 2015 8:27 pm)Lets be honest here, you have a problem, a problem with substance abuse that sticks out like a sore thumb. This greatly hurts your chances at not only school but even if you got through school a license to practice medicine. Medical Schools and License boards will see it this way with this record. You need to seriously look into this, no one here can really tell you. You need a lawyer to help you. Many courts consider expungement after a period of time, I do not know how long it is, but its usually 5 years or more when I did read it. I have a relative who was in a similar situati...
