Belsomra
I do mostly inpatient consults but have a small subspecialialzed outpatient practice as part of my faculty position. Prescribed Belsomra (suvorexant) this week for the first time and discovered it's a controlled substance. Why?? Is there actually any abuse potential? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Medical-Legal Risks to Patients of Psychiatric Clinical Documentation
Thinking about technology and information risks got me thinking about a recent journeyman shrink realization I got schooled on and wanted to ask my elders here how they avoid inadvertent documentation traps that early stage psychiatrist like me may unknowingly set for patients. 2 early stage private psychiatry ethical issues I walked into with my documentation: I documented suicidality and substance abuse thoroughly in a person who made a complete recovery from both of those, but whose... I'm a junior. How do I get ready to apply to clinical psych Phd programs?
Hi everyone! The title says it all. For reference, I have a 3.95 GPA at a competitive university. I tend to do well on standardized tests as well. As far as clinical experience goes, I've both volunteered at a substance abuse clinic and shadowed a forensic psychologist at a psychiatric hospital. As far as research experience goes, I spend about 20 hours a week (sometimes more) working in two labs. I run experiments for an animal behavior lab that studies the acute effects of nicotine on... Mental health history questions on hospital credentialing
Although data shows asking about mental health history is detrimental to physician well being and increases the likelihood of untreated physicians, somehow some hospitals still ask these questions and often add it in the same sentence as substance abuse and other illegal activities. People with very remote history of mild depression from a life event are required to answer yes to these questions opening them up for unfair scrutiny. Even thought the evidence shows asking these questions is... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

2023 Charles R. Drew University-Master of Science in Biomedical Sciences
I want to start this thread since I have not seen so much about this program. I was a student, and it is an excellent program with many research opportunities. The courseload is 75%basically the first year of medical school. The professors are amazing and really care for the students. They also provide stipends if you are a part of some initiatives such as substance abuse research training programs (SART), Cancer research, and an Enrichment Program in Biomedical Sciences. In addition, they... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

How is it possible that a residency dropout is able to get paneled with all these insurances?
Just saw an interesting ShareCare profile of an alumni of my medical school's general surgery residency who was fired in PGY-2 due to substance abuse issues. He is now practicing FM full-time in NYC, with these insurances listed on his profile: I thought that you had to complete residency and become board certified to get paneled with all these insurances in NY state? He is not board certified or eligible as he has only completed 1.5 years of residency training. And how can he... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Are victims of substance abuse considered "undeserved"?
Hi there, I currently volunteer as a discussion facilitator / coach for people in my area struggling with a wide range of addiction. This is done both in-person and remote. Think of Alcoholics Anonymous but for the wide range of all different types of addictions including drugs, food, etc. Sessions usually include personalized check-ins with each member of the group and a topic outlining a potential coping mechanism for the week (often based off principles of Acceptance Compassion Therapy)... Received 2 DUI ’s 10 and 17 years ago. Don’t have substance abuse problems. Will I get accepted to MD?
Hi, I’m 38 years old, and going back to school. I have been working with doctors for the past 10 years, and I’ve been dreaming of going back and becoming one. I fulfilled all of my pre-med, pre-req’s and I’m studying for the MCAT now. But...I’m SO worried that my past will come back to haunt me. Regrettably and horribly, I got a DUI 17 years ago followed by another 10 years ago. No one was injured, there was no accident. Nonetheless it’s horrifying to think that I did such things. I have... A case of alleged intraop recall in the news
He says he woke up during surgery. His lawsuit blames it on anesthesiologist's fentanyl abuse A lawsuit against UC San Diego alleges a former anesthesiologist was a longtime drug addict who did not give enough anesthesia to a patient. www.google.com UCSD, plantiff lawyer alleges the anesthesia record was falsified. Is this a trend in the legal world to readily assert a bad outcome ? I don't work there but would be surprised if they aren't using an EMR. CRNA denies changes to the medical record and little incentive to do so. There could be othe...

Hello, I know in general Child fellowship is the only psych fellowship that you're able to do fast track. But I've heard of some fast track options other fellowships and was wondering if any has heard of fast track substance abuse fellowships. Patient advice
I have a mid-60 year old patient with remote IV drug abuse, HIV and previous lumbar laminectomy still having low back and leg symptoms. Has failed all non-opioid meds, LESIs, MBBs, SI joints. Is currently doing a spinal cord stim trial but not getting a lot of relief and seems to be heading in the direction of a failed SCS trial. At last visit leading up to the trial, patient’s partner put a lot of pressure on me to prescribe an opioid and that it is terrible to have to see patient deal with...
