Can the use of social media contribute towards Nursing and Midwifery Council revalidation?
The emergence and now widespread use of social media (SoMe) during the past 10 years is not just a matter of personal use, and many nurses and healthcare professionals are now using SoMe as a way of updating their practice and engaging with each other. In today's modern clinical practice environment, it is challenging to be up to date with the latest evidence or government policy, due to the volume of material produced. Using SoMe can be one way of keeping abreast of the latest information in your field. At the same time, some nurses, employers and regulators are calling for caution in the use of SoMe, due to a rising...

Vet struck off following animal welfare conviction
THE RCVS Disciplinary Committee has directed that the name of a Dorset veterinary surgeon should be removed from the RCVS Register after she admitted animal welfare offences relating to two of her dogs. During a hearing on May 18 and 19, the Disciplinary Committee heard that Kerstin Vockert had been convicted under the Animal Welfare Act 2006 at Bournemouth Magistrates' Court on April 30, 2015, after she admitted failing to protect two dogs she owned from pain, suffering, injury and disease by not adequately grooming them. Increasing Incidence of Tuberculosis Infection in the Coastal Region of Northern Miyagi after the Great East Japan Earthquake.
Abstract On March 11, 2011, the Great East Japan Earthquake struck off the northeast coast of Japan. Within an hour of the earthquake, devastating tsunamis swept over the coastal region of the Miyagi Prefecture, facing Pacific Ocean. Accordingly, more than 400,000 residents were forced to stay at evacuation shelters. We investigated the changes in tuberculosis prevalence after the disaster. Annual data for all tuberculosis patients between April 1, 2009 and March 31, 2013 were extracted from the database of the Miyagi Prefectural Government. In the coastal region of Northern Miyagi, the number of tuberculo...

The RCVS Disciplinary Committee has directed that the name of Kirk Thompson should be removed from the RCVS Register after finding him unfit to practise veterinary surgery. At a hearing on January 26, the committee heard that in April 2014 Mr Thompson had been convicted at Newcastle Crown Court of manslaughter, assault causing actual bodily harm and possession of methylamphetamine. He was sentenced to 15 years' imprisonment. The RCVS reports that, while the College opened a case against Mr Thompson in 2014, it was only in October 2015 that it received confirmation from the Supreme Court of the final conclusion of his subse...

Seven sins in publishing (but who's counting…).
Abstract 'Oh what a tangled web we weave, When first we practise to deceive.' Sir Walter Scott (Marmion, 1808) Think of scientific misconduct in the UK and Malcolm Pearce - one of the most high-profile cases - comes immediately to mind. Malcolm Pearce was an assistant editor of the British Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, and a senior lecturer at St George's Medical School, when two fraudulent papers were published in the journal. A whistleblower at the hospital was the catalyst for an investigation that led to Pearce being fired, found guilty of serious professional misconduct by the General Medical...
