An Analysis of Right Hemisphere Stroke Discourse in the Modern Cookie Theft Picture
CONCLUSIONS: Multiple measures of microlinguistic discourse characteristics differentiated adults with right hemisphere stroke from controls, highlighting variations in both the quantity and quality of connected speech. Findings continue to underscore the contribution and correlation between cognitive skills and discourse performance. Future work is needed to assess the relationship between particular cognitive domains and discourse production as well as to investigate longitudinal changes to discourse production during stroke recovery.SUPPLEMENTAL MATERIAL: https://doi.org/10.23641/asha.20778541.PMID:36075208 | DOI:10.104...

Incidence of Poststroke Depression in Patients With Poststroke Dysphagia
CONCLUSIONS: Our results demonstrated that persons with poststroke dysphagia were as, or slightly more, likely to have PSD compared to the general stroke population, and to our knowledge, they establish the first reported incidence of PSD in Medicare patients with dysphagia after AIS. Future research is warranted to further explore the effects of PSD on poststroke dysphagia.PMID:35858266 | DOI:10.1044/2022_AJSLP-21-00346

Electrical stimulation of the brain may help people who stutter
When Guillermo Mejias was 7 years old, his parents sent him out to buy bread during a family holiday in southern Spain. Mejias still remembers his growing anxiety as he walked to the bakery, repeating what he would say over and over in his head. But when the moment arrived, he was unable to produce a single word. He recalls returning empty-handed, ashamed, and wondering what to tell his parents. “I was so tense that I had been inadvertently biting my cheeks and tongue and my mouth was bleeding,” he says. Mejias still stutters, but today, as a brain researcher at the Complutense University of Madrid, he investigate...
