Vagus Nerve Stimulation Paired with Upper-Limb Rehabilitation After Stroke: Two- and Three-Year Follow-up from the Pilot Study
CONCLUSIONS: Significant effects of Paired VNS therapy at one year were maintained at years 2 and 3, and further improvements in both impairment and function were observed in years 2 and 3. These changes were associated with improvements in measures of activity and participation.PMID:37001842 | DOI:10.1016/j.apmr.2023.02.012

Opportunities for Improving Motor Assessment and Rehabilitation After Stroke by Leveraging Video-Based Pose Estimation
Am J Phys Med Rehabil. 2023 Feb 1;102(2S Suppl 1):S68-S74. doi: 10.1097/PHM.0000000000002131.ABSTRACTStroke is a leading cause of long-term disability in adults in the United States. As the healthcare system moves further into an era of digital medicine and remote monitoring, technology continues to play an increasingly important role in post-stroke care. In this Analysis and Perspective article, opportunities for using human pose estimation-an emerging technology that uses artificial intelligence to track human movement kinematics from simple videos recorded using household devices (e.g., smartphones, tablets)-to improve ...

Emerging Trends and Hotspots in Tai Chi Fall Prevention: Analysis and Visualization
This study has identified the core countries are the United States, China, Australia, and England, which are also the origins of the core institutions. Besides this, we also have found two large research groups led by Li and Sherrington. Moreover, the result has revealed that J Aging Phys Act and J Am Geriatr Soc are the primary journals. Geriatrics and gerontology, sport sciences, rehabilitation, and gerontology are the leading categories. Furthermore, one of the more important findings to come out in this study are that "elderly", "Parkinson's disease", "vestibular rehabilitation", "frail patient", and "community fall pr...

The Effect of Missed Items on the Reliability of the Kessler Foundation Neglect Assessment Process
CONCLUSIONS: Clinicians should make every effort to capture all items on the KF-NAP. However, missed items occur in the majority of cases due to patient factors and barriers inherent to the inpatient hospital setting. When missed items are necessary, clinicians can confidently interpret a prorated score when seven or more items are scored.PMID:35304121 | DOI:10.1016/j.apmr.2022.01.165

Emulating Three Clinical Trials that Compare Stroke Rehabilitation at Inpatient Rehabilitation Facilities to Skilled Nursing Facilities
CONCLUSION(S): IRF patients had superior outcomes, but differences were attenuated when IRFs and SNFs from larger rehabilitation networks were compared. The vulnerability of the findings to unmeasured confounding supports the need for an RCT.PMID:35245481 | DOI:10.1016/j.apmr.2021.12.029

A longitudinal examination of objective neighborhood walkability, body mass index, and waist circumference: the REasons for Geographic And Racial Differences in Stroke study
CONCLUSION: People with cumulative neighborhood walkability scores in the Walker's Paradise range were less likely to be overweight/obese independent of other factors, while people with scores in the Very Walkable range were less likely to be overweight/obese and less likely to have a moderate-to-high risk WC. Addressing neighborhood walkability is one approach to combating obesity.PMID:35151322 | DOI:10.1186/s12966-022-01247-7

Image-based immersed boundary model of the aortic root.
Abstract Each year, approximately 300,000 heart valve repair or replacement procedures are performed worldwide, including approximately 70,000 aortic valve replacement surgeries in the United States alone. Computational platforms for simulating cardiovascular devices such as prosthetic heart valves promise to improve device design and assist in treatment planning, including patient-specific device selection. This paper describes progress in constructing anatomically and physiologically realistic immersed boundary (IB) models of the dynamics of the aortic root and ascending aorta. This work builds on earlier IB mod...
