The correlation between CVP and SVV and intraoperative minimal blood loss in living donor hepatectomy
Blood loss in liver surgery is found to be correlated with central venous pressure (CVP). The aim of the current retrospective study is to find out the cut of value of CVP and stroke volume variation (SVV), which may increase the risk of having intraoperative blood loss more than 100 ml during living liver donor hepatectomy.

Suitability of Corneal Tissue for Transplantation Derived From Violent Death: A 10-Year Analysis
Trauma is a leading cause of death and disability worldwide. Corneal tissue donors generally are those who suffered an injury to the brain or fatal trauma caused by stroke, vehicle/motorbike accidents, gunshot wounds, and drowning or cardiovascular death. In Brazil, the Distrito Federal (DF) Eye Bank, located within a trauma center hospital, and the Secretariat of Public Security have collaborated with the aim of increasing the overall number of cornea donations from fatal trauma victims. The purpose of this study was to determine the suitability of cornea tissue for transplantation derived from trauma-related death.

Diagnostic Value of Coagulation Factor and Intracranial Pressure Monitoring in Acute Liver Failure from Heat Stroke: Case Report and Review of the Literature
Exertional heat stroke (HS) with resultant acute liver failure (ALF) is a rare condition with high mortality. Diagnosis of ALF in the context of HS is confounded by numerous laboratory abnormalities related to multisystem organ dysfunction.

Can Stroke Volume Variation Be an Alternative to Central Venous Pressure in Patients Undergoing Kidney Transplantation?
Stroke volume variation (SVV) is known to be a simple and less invasive hemodynamic parameter for evaluating fluid responsiveness and preload status. Central venous pressure (CVP) has been targeted to achieve an adequate level for improving the graft perfusion and long-term graft function in kidney transplantation (KT) recipients, despite the various potential complications. The aim of this study was to investigate whether SVV could substitute for CVP in guiding intravascular volume management during KT.

Effects of Antegrade and Retrograde Machine Perfusion Preservation on Cardiac Function After Transplantation in Canines
Abstract: Introduction: Most studies investigating machine perfusion preservation for heart transplantation perfuse through the aortic root (antegrade), but the coronary sinus (retrograde) is a potential option. We hypothesized that retrograde machine perfusion provides better functional protection than static storage, while avoiding the potential irregular perfusion seen when aortic insufficiency occurs with antegrade perfusion.Materials and Methods: Eighteen canine donor hearts were arrested, procured, and stored in modified Celsior solution for 4 hours by using either static storage at 0°C to 4°C (n = 6) or machine p...

Utilization of Bioreactance Technique as Indicator for Preload Responsiveness During Living Donor Liver Donation
Conclusions: Our study has shown that SVV measured from the bioreactance technique is a poor indicator for monitoring preload responsiveness during LDLD.

Corrected Flow Time Is a Good Indicator for Preload Responsiveness During Living Donor Liver Donation
Conclusions: FTc is a noninvasive, easily obtainable, and essentially good preload indicator during LDLD.

Can Coronary Vein Size Predict Hemodynamic Instability During Inferior Vena Cava Clamping in Liver Transplantation?
Conclusions: Coronary vein size is a weak predictor of hemodynamic tolerability and instability during portal vein and inferior vena cava clamping in this kind of surgery.

Curcumin Treatment Protects Against Renal Ischemia and Reperfusion Injury–Induced Cardiac Dysfunction and Myocardial Injury
Conclusions: Curcumin pretreatment improved cardiac contractility and attenuated myocardial and renal injury through reducing inflammatory response in the kidney and heart and oxidative stress in the myocardium.

Hormone Therapy in Women After Heart Transplantation
Conclusions: HT is not associated with poor outcome or adverse effects in female heart transplant patients after age 35 years. However, a larger cohort of patients is necessary to confirm these observations.

Effect of Reduced Sympathetic Hyperactivity on Cardiovascular Risk Factors in Kidney Transplantation Patients
Abstract: Background: Hyperactivity of the sympathetic nervous system caused by chronic kidney disease has detrimental effects on hypertension and cardiovascular morbidity. Kidney transplantation does not ameliorate sympathetic nerve overactivity; however, bilateral nephrectomy eliminates it. The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of bilateral nephrectomy on risk factors for cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in long-term follow-up. Material and Methods: We studied 24 kidney recipients aged 44 ± 13 years who had undergone native bilateral nephrectomy. The control group included 17 recipients with preserve...

Cardiovascular Risk Factors and Events in Pancreas-Kidney Transplants
Abstract: Cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease (CCVD) are major causes of morbidity and mortality among patients with diabetes. Strict control of treatable risk factors that contribute to atherosclerosis is important to reduce the risk of stroke, myocardial infarction, and peripheral arterial disease. Simultaneous pancreas-kidney transplantation (SPKT) may significantly improve these risk factors in patients with type 1 diabetes. We studied 103 SPKT from our center with both organs functioning for metabolic and hypertensive control; body mass index (BMI); immunosuppression; and CCVD events. The 53 females/50 males s...

Neurological Complications Prevalence and Long-Term Survival After Liver Transplantation
Conclusions: Neurological complications led to longer hospital stays with greater early morbidity and mortality. Knowledge of these complications appears to be extremely important for the multidisciplinary transplantation team to decrease its prevalence as well as to diagnose and treat early.
