Glutathione: A Samsonian life-sustaining small molecule that protects against oxidative stress, ageing and damaging inflammation
Front Nutr. 2022 Nov 1;9:1007816. doi: 10.3389/fnut.2022.1007816. eCollection 2022.ABSTRACTMany local and systemic diseases especially diseases that are leading causes of death globally like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, atherosclerosis with ischemic heart disease and stroke, cancer and severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) causing coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19), involve both, (1) oxidative stress with excessive production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) that lower glutathione (GSH) levels, and (2) inflammation. The GSH tripeptide (γ- L-glutamyl-L-cysteinyl-glycine), the most abundant w...

Relationship between the therapeutic potential of various plant-derived bioactive compounds and their related microRNAs in neurological disorders
CONCLUSION: The emergence of miRNAs as pathological regulatory factors provides a new direction for the study of bioactive compounds in Traditional Chinese medicine and the elucidating of their epigenetic effects. Elucidating the regulatory relationship between bioactive compounds and miRNAs may help to identify new therapeutic targets and promoting the application of these compounds in precision medicine through their targeted molecular activity.PMID:36368284 | DOI:10.1016/j.phymed.2022.154501

Platelet Redox Imbalance in Hypercholesterolemia: A Big Problem for a Small Cell
Int J Mol Sci. 2022 Sep 28;23(19):11446. doi: 10.3390/ijms231911446.ABSTRACTThe imbalance between reactive oxygen species (ROS) synthesis and their scavenging by anti-oxidant defences is the common soil of many disorders, including hypercholesterolemia. Platelets, the smallest blood cells, are deeply involved in the pathophysiology of occlusive arterial thrombi associated with myocardial infarction and stroke. A great deal of evidence shows that both increased intraplatelet ROS synthesis and impaired ROS neutralization are implicated in the thrombotic process. Hypercholesterolemia is recognized as cause of atherosclerosis,...

Hawthorn fruit acid consumption attenuates hyperlipidemia-associated oxidative damage in rats
CONCLUSION: HFA administration can provide health benefits by counteracting the effects of hyperlipidemia caused by an HFD in the body, and the underlying mechanism of this event is closely related to the activation of the Nrf2/HO-1 signaling pathway.PMID:35990322 | PMC:PMC9384962 | DOI:10.3389/fnut.2022.936229

The Bioactivities of Phycocyanobilin from Spirulina
J Immunol Res. 2022 Jun 11;2022:4008991. doi: 10.1155/2022/4008991. eCollection 2022.ABSTRACTPhycocyanobilin (PCB) is a linear open-chain tetrapyrrole chromophore that captures and senses light and a variety of biological activities, such as anti-oxidation, anti-cancer, and anti-inflammatory. In this paper, the biological activities of PCB are reviewed, and the related mechanism of PCB and its latest application in disease treatment are introduced. PCB can resist oxidation by scavenging free radicals, inhibiting the activity of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) oxidase, and delaying the activity of antiox...

Health benefits of astaxanthin against age-related diseases of multiple organs: A comprehensive review
Crit Rev Food Sci Nutr. 2022 Jun 16:1-66. doi: 10.1080/10408398.2022.2084600. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAge-related diseases are associated with increased morbidity in the past few decades and the cost associated with the treatment of these age-related diseases exerts a substantial impact on social and health care expenditure. Anti-aging strategies aim to mitigate, delay and reverse aging-associated diseases, thereby improving quality of life and reducing the burden of age-related pathologies. The natural dietary antioxidant supplementation offers substantial pharmacological and therapeutic effects against various dise...

The role of glutathione peroxidase-1 in health and disease
Free Radic Biol Med. 2022 Jun 9:S0891-5849(22)00224-6. doi: 10.1016/j.freeradbiomed.2022.06.004. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTGlutathione peroxidase 1 (GPx1) is an important cellular antioxidant enzyme that is found in the cytoplasm and mitochondria of mammalian cells. Like most selenoenzymes, it has a single redox-sensitive selenocysteine amino acid that is important for the enzymatic reduction of hydrogen peroxide and soluble lipid hydroperoxides. Glutathione provides the source of reducing equivalents for its function. As an antioxidant enzyme, GPx1 modulates the balance between necessary and harmful levels of reactive...
