Outcomes of endovascular repair of infrarenal penetrating aortic ulcers
Conclusions: According to this registry data, endovascular repair of PAU is technically feasible with acceptable perioperative outcomes, but further studies investigating mid- and long-term data are needed before invasive treatment of PAU disease in an elderly and comorbid patient population should be recommended.PMID:36880201 | DOI:10.1024/0301-1526/a001060

Mechanism of Hypoxia-Mediated Smooth Muscle Cell Proliferation Leading to Vascular Remodeling
Biomed Res Int. 2022 Dec 24;2022:3959845. doi: 10.1155/2022/3959845. eCollection 2022.ABSTRACTVascular remodeling refers to changes in the size, contraction, distribution, and flow rate of blood vessels and even changes in vascular function. Vascular remodeling can cause cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. It can also lead to other systemic diseases, such as pulmonary hypertension, pulmonary atherosclerosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, stroke, and ascites of broilers. Hypoxia is one of the main causes of vascular remodeling. Prolonged hypoxia or intermittent hypoxia can lead to loss of lung ventilation,...

A Novel Index in the Prediction of Pneumonia Following Acute Ischemic Stroke
CONCLUSIONS: This study presents factors that show a significant association with the occurrence of pneumonia in patients with acute ischemic stroke. The calculated PNEUMOINDEX consists of data obtained at admission, namely NYHA III and IV heart failure, COPD, generalized atherosclerosis, NIHHS score on admission, and CRP/Hgb ratio, and shows high prediction accuracy in predicting hospital-acquired pneumonia in ischemic stroke patients.PMID:36430028 | DOI:10.3390/ijerph192215306

Glutathione: A Samsonian life-sustaining small molecule that protects against oxidative stress, ageing and damaging inflammation
Front Nutr. 2022 Nov 1;9:1007816. doi: 10.3389/fnut.2022.1007816. eCollection 2022.ABSTRACTMany local and systemic diseases especially diseases that are leading causes of death globally like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, atherosclerosis with ischemic heart disease and stroke, cancer and severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) causing coronavirus disease 19 (COVID-19), involve both, (1) oxidative stress with excessive production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) that lower glutathione (GSH) levels, and (2) inflammation. The GSH tripeptide (γ- L-glutamyl-L-cysteinyl-glycine), the most abundant w...

Temporal trends in incidence, patient characteristics, microbiology and in-hospital mortality in patients with infective endocarditis: a contemporary analysis of 86,469 cases between 2007 and 2019
ConclusionsIn this contemporary cohort, incidence of IE increased over time and in-hospital mortality remained high (~  15%). Whilestaphylococcus andstreptococcus were the predominant microorganisms, bacteremia withstaphylococcus and Gram-negative pathogens were associated with higher likelihood of in-hospital mortality. Our results highlight the need for new preventive strategies and interventions in patients with IE.Graphical abstractInfective endocarditis in Germany.BCNIE blood culture-negative infective endocarditis,IE infective endocarditis

Health benefits of astaxanthin against age-related diseases of multiple organs: A comprehensive review
Crit Rev Food Sci Nutr. 2022 Jun 16:1-66. doi: 10.1080/10408398.2022.2084600. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAge-related diseases are associated with increased morbidity in the past few decades and the cost associated with the treatment of these age-related diseases exerts a substantial impact on social and health care expenditure. Anti-aging strategies aim to mitigate, delay and reverse aging-associated diseases, thereby improving quality of life and reducing the burden of age-related pathologies. The natural dietary antioxidant supplementation offers substantial pharmacological and therapeutic effects against various dise...

Associations of general health conditions with masticatory performance and maximum bite force in older adults: A systematic review of cross-sectional studies
CONCLUSIONS: Negative associations between masticatory function of older adults and presence of several systemic diseases have been reported in a number of studies while there are positive associations between masticatory function and some physical function indicators.CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: This study provides valuable information on the association of masticatory function with general health, which draws clinicians' attention to the masticatory function of older adults who suffer from certain systemic diseases or physical dysfunction, and to the need to improve their masticatory ability to achieve healthy aging.PMID:35691...

Multimorbidity, guideline ‐directed medical therapies, and associated outcomes among hospitalized heart failure patients
ConclusionsComorbidity clusters were prevalent and associated with poorer outcomes. GDMT remained beneficial regardless of the comorbidity burden but tended to weaken with increasing comorbidity burden. Further research is required to optimize medical care in these patients.

Comparison of the long-term outcomes and risk factors of aortic stenosis treatment - in patients undergoing transcatheter aortic valve implantation and surgical aortic valve replacement
CONCLUSIONS: There were no significant differences regarding prognosis after TAVI and SAVR at the 24-month follow-up in propensity score matching model. Independent predictive factors of late mortality after both procedures were EuroScore II and the respiratory failure. Independent predictive factors of late mortality specific for TAVI were NOAF, increased RDW and for SAVR: TIA, stroke, COPD and RBC transfusion.PMID:35521716 | DOI:10.33963/KP.a2022.0122
