Altered plasma levels of apixaban in major gastrointestinal tract surgery: A case report and review of the literature
We describe a case of suspected altered apixaban disposition in a patient with an upper gastrointestinal cancer resection treated with apixaban for non-valvular atrial fibrillation. Diagnosis of ischemic stroke for left hemiparesis was confirmed due to recent emergence of a hypodense area in the posterior capsular nucleus of ischemic reference in a context of binuclear capsular lacunar lesions. Thus, apixaban underexposure was suspected from anamnestic data and oral anticoagulation was switched to parenteral at the next scheduled dose for stroke recurrence. Before switching apixaban pharmacokinetic analysis was performed a...

Effects of vitamin B < sub > 12 < /sub > deficiency on risk and outcome of ischemic stroke
Clin Biochem. 2023 May 27:110591. doi: 10.1016/j.clinbiochem.2023.110591. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIschemic stroke is the most prevalent form of stroke and has a high incidence in older adults, characterized by high morbidity, mortality, disability, and recurrence rate. Vitamin B12 deficiency is prevalent in the elderly and has been reported to be associated with ischemic stroke. The mechanisms maybe include the disorder of methylation metabolism, accumulation of toxic metabolites, immune dysfunction, affecting gut microbial composition and gut-brain immune homeostasis, and toxic stress responses to the brain. Vitamin...

Association of Angiotensin II Type 1 Receptor (AT1R) Gene Polymorphism with Angiotensin II Serum Levels in Patients with Essential Hypertension
This study aimed to determine genotype and allele frequencies of A1166C polymorphism of AT1R gene in Indian patients with EH and correlated with serum levels of Angiotensin II. A total of 200 patients with EH and 200 age- and gender-matched control individuals were included in this study from the General Medicine Department Outpatient at Narayana Medical College and Hospital, Nellore, Andhra Pradesh, India. Patients with systolic blood pressure (SBP) ≥ 140 mmHg and/or diastolic blood pressure (DBP) ≥ 90 mmHg were considered as hypertensive. The findings of this study revealed significantly increased risk of C/A heteroz...

independent origin for M.3243A & gt;G mitochondrial mutation in three venezuelan cases of melas syndrome
Clin Biochem. 2022 Sep 18:S0009-9120(22)00221-1. doi: 10.1016/j.clinbiochem.2022.09.007. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMitochondrial myopathy, encephalopathy, lactic acidosis, and stroke-like episodes (MELAS) is a multisystem and progressive neurodegenerative mitochondrial disease, caused by point nucleotide changes in the mtDNA where 80% of cases have the mutation m.3243A>G in the MT-TL1 gene. In this work, we described the clinical, biochemical and molecular analysis of three Venezuelan patients affected with MELAS syndrome. All cases showed lactic acidosis, cortical cerebral atrophy on magnetic resonance imaging and ...
