Low-Dose Aspirin Linked To Bleeding In The Skull, New Report Says
(CNN) — Taking low-dose aspirin to prevent heart disease and stroke is associated with an increased risk of bleeding in the skull in people without a history of those conditions, according to a new report. Researchers analyzed data from 13 previous studies in which over 130,000 people ages 42 to 74, who didn’t have a history of heart disease or stroke, were given either aspirin or a placebo for the prevention of these conditions. All the trials reported on the risk of head bleeding. People who took the placebo had a 0.46% risk of having a head bleed during the combined trial periods. For those who took aspirin,...

Daily Aspirin No Longer Recommended To Prevent Heart Attacks In Older Adults
(CNN) — If you’re a healthy older adult looking for ways to reduce your risk of heart attack and stroke, don’t turn to that age-old standby: daily low-dose aspirin. It’s no longer recommended as a preventative for older adults who don’t have a high risk or existing heart disease, according to guidelines announced Sunday by the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association. “For the most part, we are now much better at treating risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes and especially high cholesterol,” said North Carolina cardiologist Dr. Kevin Campbell, who wa...

Cheap drug hope for 500,000 at risk of stroke
HALF a million Britons who are unknowingly at risk of a fatal stroke caused by an irregular heartbeat could be saved by cheap clot-busting drugs, according to research. A study in the European Heart Journal found that 4,000 strokes were prevented in England between 2015 and 2016 among patients with atrial fibrillation , a heart rhythm disorder, by taking anti-coagulants such as warfarin.

Blood-thinning drugs may reduce dementia risk in people with irregular heartbeats
Conclusion If you’ve been diagnosed with AF and you have been prescribed anticoagulant treatments such as warfarin or clopidogrel, we already know they protect you against having a stroke. This study suggests they may also help to protect you against dementia. Cutting the risk of dementia for people who have a raised risk because of AF would be an exciting step forward. Unfortunately, we can’t tell from this study whether the protection against dementia was down to the anticoagulants, because of the possible effect of unmeasured confounding factors. Usually, we would want to see a randomised controlled trial (RCT) to f...

Risk of aspirin-related bleeding is higher in the over-75s
Conclusion This valuable cohort study helps to quantify the extent of bleeding risk in people taking aspirin for secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease. Aspirin is well known to carry bleeding risk – particularly in older adults – but this study suggests the risk may be higher than previously thought. The researchers say that for adults under the age of 75, the annual bleeding risk at around 1% is similar to that suggested by previous trials, as is the ratio of bleeds to the number of cardiovascular events. However, this risk increases for older adults, especially for major bleeds of the stomach and upper diges...
