June is National Aphasia Awareness Month, and I wanted to share some of what I have learned on my journey through aphasia after brain injury.
According to Wikipedia, the term aphasia implies that one or more communication modalities in the brain have been damaged—and are therefore functioning incorrectly. The difficulties for people with aphasia can range from occasional trouble finding words to losing the ability to speak, read, or write; their intelligence, however, is unaffected.

State Lawmakers Consider Taxing Soda, Sugary Drinks
BOSTON (CBS) –State lawmakers are considering a new tax on soda and other sugary drinks. The higher the sugar content, the more money you’ll pay.
The bill’s sponsor said the tax could help promote healthy alternatives while the opposition says it will hurt the economy.
A hearing at the State House on Tuesday brought out testimony on both sides.
Julieta Lopez held up packets with the amount of sugar in a large soda.

Risk of aspirin-related bleeding is higher in the over-75s

Aspirin is well known to carry bleeding risk – particularly in older adults – but this study suggests the risk may be higher than previously thought. Being overweight, not just obese, still carries serious health risks

This impressively large global study demonstrates that the prevalence of obesity is increasing worldwide among both children and adults. It supports what has long been thought, that increased body mass index (BMI) contributes to a range of illnesses and is ultimately responsible for a large number of deaths, particularly from cardiovascular disease.
One potential limitation is the use of self-reported BMI or health outcome data in some of the studies, although the majority used a specific independent measurement so this is unlikely to have biased results too much.

Health stories that suggest eating or drinking something we like, whether it's chocolate or wine, are always popular. But they don't really tell us anything we don't know already. Certain foods may have a small impact on certain types of diseases, but it's the overall diet that counts.

Sometimes, people commit suicide and it does make some sense. It’s scary and upsets our world, but on a basic level we think we understand. The suicide of Robin Williams comes to mind. He had a history of depression and his health was failing. BOSTON (AP) — Lawmakers on Beacon Hill are joining activists in other states pushing for taxes on sodas that they say will ease the rise in obesity-related diseases and bring in money for programs aimed at improving the health of children in Massachusetts.

This study has found that while overall gluten consumption in people without coeliac disease may not be related to heart disease risk, avoiding whole grains (wheat, barley and rye) in order to avoid gluten may be associated with increased heart disease risk.
