Recommendations of the Alzheimer's Disease-Related Dementias Conference
The National Alzheimer's Project Act, signed into law in 2011, mandates a National Plan to Address Alzheimer's Disease that is updated annually. In the Plan, the term Alzheimer disease includes not only Alzheimer disease (AD) proper, but also several specified related dementias, namely, frontotemporal, Lewy body, vascular, and mixed dementia. In response to a specific action item in the 2012 National Plan, the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, in collaboration with the National Institute on Aging, convened panels of experts and conducted a 2-day public conference to develop research priorities and ti...

Evidence-Based Guidelines for the Management of Large Hemispheric Infarction
Abstract Large hemispheric infarction (LHI), also known as malignant middle cerebral infarction, is a devastating disease associated with significant disability and mortality. Clinicians and family members are often faced with a paucity of high quality clinical data as they attempt to determine the most appropriate course of treatment for patients with LHI, and current stroke guidelines do not provide a detailed approach regarding the day-to-day management of these complicated patients. To address this need, the Neurocritical Care Society organized an international multidisciplinary consensus conference on the cri...

A systematic review of the incidence and prevalence of cardiac, cerebrovascular, and peripheral vascular disease in multiple sclerosis
Conclusion: Despite the relatively high prevalence of some vascular comorbidities in the MS population, important gaps exist in our understanding of their epidemiology. Most of our knowledge is based on studies conducted in a small number of regions.

Intensive care therapy of space-occupying large hemispheric infarction : Summary of the NCS/DGNI guidelines.
spheric Infarct“ der NCS und DGNI) Abstract Large hemispheric infarction (LHI), synonymously called malignant middle cerebral artery (MCA) infarction, is a severe neurological disease with a high mortality and morbidity. Treating physicians as well as relatives are often faced with few and low quality data when attempting to apply optimal treatment to these patients and make decisions. While current stroke treatment guidelines focus on risk factors, prevention and acute management, they include only limited recommendations concerning intensive care management of LHI. The Neurocritical Care Society (NCS) and the ...

Teaching a Neurology Continuing Medical Education Course to Ghanaian Physician Assistants (P1.281)
Conclusions: The provision of education in the diagnosis and treatment of neurological conditions to primary care providers is one intervention that can address the limited supply of neurologists in lower income countries. This study suggests that a continuing medical education course can increase participant self-confidence in major topics in neurology and that the most valuable contribution of an educational intervention could be instruction in the neurological exam.Disclosure: Dr. O'Donnell has nothing to disclose. Novel Treatments in Neuroprotection for Aneurysmal Subarachnoid Hemorrhage
Opinion statement New neuroprotective treatments aimed at preventing or minimizing “delayed brain injury” are attractive areas of investigation and hold the potential to have substantial beneficial effects on aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH) survivors. The underlying mechanisms for this “delayed brain injury” are multi-factorial and not fully understood. The most ideal treatment strategies would have the potential for a pleotropic effect positively modulating multiple implicated pathophysiological mechanisms at once. My personal management (RFJ) of patients with aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage...
