A systematic review of pulse pressure variation and stroke volume variation to predict fluid responsiveness during cardiac and thoracic surgery
Abstract This systematic review aims to summarize the published data on the reliability of pulse pressure variation (PPV) and stroke volume variation (SVV) to predict fluid responsiveness in an open-chest setting during cardio-thoracic surgery. The analysis included studies reporting receiver operating characteristics or correlation coefficients between PPV/SVV and change in any hemodynamic variables after a fluid challenge test in open-chest conditions. Electronic Tablets Speed Stroke Care During Patient Transport

Affecting 33.5 million patients worldwide, atrial fibrillation is the most common form of cardiac arrhythmia. As if having an irregular heart beat wasn't troubling enough, patients with atrial fibrillation are also much more likely to have a stroke. "Atrial fibrillation is thought to be responsible for 20 to 30 percent of all strokes in the United States," said Northwestern University's Michael Markl, the Lester B. and Frances T. Knight Professor of Cardiac Imaging. "While atrial fibrillation is easy to detect and diagnose, it's not easy to predict who will suffer a stroke because of it."

Call for Tender: Innovative Post-Stroke Tool

Telemedicine: Economic and clinical evaluation of the management of ischemic stroke
Discussion and conclusion To be implemented and funded at a large scale, the clinical and budgetary impact of telemedicine need to be assessed. In our study the introduction of the Telestroke system did not significantly increase expenditure related to the management of IS compared with direct thrombolysis at the SU. But the distribution of revenues between healthcares centers need to be optimised.

Stroke Patient Improvement with a Brain-Computer Interface
University of Adelaide researchers have shown that it is possible for stroke patients to improve motor function using special training involving connecting brain signals with a computer. In a "proof-of-principle" study published in the journal Royal Society Open Science, the researchers described how this brain-computer interface (BCI) produced a 36% improvement in motor function of a stroke-damaged hand.

Portable Device Detects Severe Stroke in Seconds with 92 Percent Accuracy
A new device worn like a visor can detect emergent large-vessel occlusion in patients with suspected stroke with 92 percent accuracy, report clinical investigators at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), Mount Sinai, the University of Tennessee Health Sciences Center and elsewhere in an article published online on March 6, 2018, in the Journal of Neurointerventional Surgery. Patients with large-vessel occlusions can then be routed to a Comprehensive Stroke Center with endovascular capabilities.

Scattering Transform of Heart Rate Variability for the Prediction of Ischemic Stroke in Patients with Atrial Fibrillation.
CONCLUSIONS: Scattering coefficients were found to play a significant role in predicting IS, notably for patients not receiving antithrombotic treatment. S-SVM improves IS detection performance and also provides insight on which features are important. Notably, it shows that AF patients not taking antithrombotic treatment are characterized by a slow modulation of RR dynamics in the ULF range and a faster modulation in the HF range.
