Isolated Tricuspid Operations: Society of Thoracic Surgeons Adult Cardiac Surgery Database Analysis
CONCLUSIONS: Isolated tricuspid repair was associated with lower adjusted mortality and morbidities than replacement. Beating heart operation was associated with lower adjusted major morbidities. Pre-operative MELD scores may identify high-risk patients, and referral to higher volume centers may help improve outcomes.PMID:36696939 | DOI:10.1016/j.athoracsur.2022.12.041

Assessing electrocardiogram changes after ischemic stroke with artificial intelligence
by Ziqiang Zeng, Qixuan Wang, Yingjing Yu, Yichu Zhang, Qi Chen, Weiming Lou, Yuting Wang, Lingyu Yan, Zujue Cheng, Lijun Xu, Yingping Yi, Guangqin Fan, Libin Deng ObjectiveIschemic stroke (IS) with subsequent cerebrocardiac syndrome (CCS) has a poor prognosis. We aimed to investigate electrocardiogram (ECG) changes after IS with artificial intelligence (AI). MethodsWe collected ECGs from a healthy population and patients with IS, and then analyzed participant demographics and ECG parameters to identify abnormal features in post-IS ECGs. Next, we trained the convolutional neural network (CNN), random forest (RF) and suppor...

Theory of Pivoting Uncertainties: Advance Care Planning Among Individuals Living With Mechanical Circulatory Support
CONCLUSIONS: In this sample, patients were ready to share their concerns about the uncertainties of living with MCS and waited for MCS clinicians to initiate ACP. The theory of pivoting uncertainties is useful for elucidating the ebb and flow of ACP and lending clinicians' guidance for opportunities to initiate these sensitive conversations.PMID:36563323 | DOI:10.1097/JCN.0000000000000960

Real-World Study Confirms Benefit of XARELTO ® (rivaroxaban) for Secondary Prevention of Venous Thromboembolism in Cancer Patients
TITUSVILLE, NJ, December 9, 2022 – The Janssen Pharmaceutical Companies of Johnson & Johnson today announced observational data from eight years of clinical practice showing that the oral Factor Xa inhibitor XARELTO® (rivaroxaban) is associated with comparable effectiveness and safety to the Factor Xa inhibitor apixaban for the treatment of cancer-associated thromboembolism (CAT) in a broad cohort of patients with various cancer types. Patients with CAT are at a higher risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE), which is the second-leading cause of death in people with cancer.1Data from the Observational Study in Cancer-A...

Engineering a New Polymeric Heart Valve Using 3D Printing-TRISKELION
Conclusions: The development of a heart valve with a central structure proves to be a promising concept. It offers another principle to address the problem of longevity in currently used heart valves. Using 3D printing to develop new prototypes provides a fast, effective, and accurate way to deepen understanding of its physical properties and requirements. This opens the door for translating and combining results into modern prototypes using highly biocompatible polymers, internal structures, and advanced valve layouts.PMID:36422234 | DOI:10.3390/medicina58111695
