An exploratory descriptive cohort study of 90-day prognosis after acute ischaemic stroke with mechanical thrombectomy
CONCLUSION: Almost half of the surviving patients had a poor prognosis. In our country, this surgery and rehabilitation impose a significant financial burden that needs to be addressed. However, the longer length of hospital stay and higher costs at discharge may be contributing factors to worse outcomes. The outcomes of comprehensive nursing assessment of the patients, including nursing needs, activities of daily living, and neurological function, can predict their outcome.IMPACT STATEMENT: We recommend a comprehensive nursing assessment at discharge that predicts patient outcomes and can be used for subsequent targeted i...

Nutritional status and clinical evolution of the elderly in home enteral nutritional therapy: a retrospective cohort study.
CONCLUSION: the majority of patients in home enteral nutrition therapy presented maintenance and / or improvement of clinical and nutritional status. Therefore, this therapy may contribute to a better clinical and nutritional evolution. PMID: 31618391 [PubMed - in process]

Interventions for maintaining nasogastric feeding after stroke: an integrative review of effectiveness and acceptability
ConclusionCurrent clinical practice is underpinned by assumptions around the acceptability of NL and HM to secure NGTs. This results in reliance on consensual judgement between professional, patients and their families to guide their use among individuals with dysphagia after stroke. Further research is required to assess the effectiveness of HM and acceptability of both NL and HM among stroke patients to inform guideline development. Relevance to Clinical PracticeGiven the lack of evidence on the acceptability of HM and NL among stroke patients to inform evidence‐based guidelines and protocols, healthcare professionals ...

Stroke: ineffective tube securement reduces nutrition and drug treatment.
In conclusion, most tubes studied were lost to inadvertent tube removal, leading to clinically significant delays to nutrition, hydration and drug treatments; this may impair recovery. Reducing tube loss is likely to reduce patient distress, treatment cost and enhance recovery. PMID: 28640722 [PubMed - in process]

The impact of aspiration pneumonia and nasogastric feeding on clinical outcomes in stroke patients: a retrospective cohort study
ConclusionHigh prevalence and cost of complications associated with stroke highlights the complexity of providing nursing and allied health care to this patient population. This provides a snap shot of dysphagia related complications experienced by stroke patients. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

Development and psychometric properties of ECPICID ‐AVC to measure informal caregivers’ skills when caring for older stroke survivors at home
ConclusionThe psychometric properties of the measurement tool showed acceptable results allowing its implementation in clinical practice by the nursing community staff for evaluating practical skills in informal caregivers when providing care to older stroke survivors living at home.

Nasogastric feeding for stroke patients: practice and education.
CONCLUSIONS: This study shows that the management of NG feeding for dysphagic stroke patients requires standardisation, as does the education for nurses to ensure that this intervention is carried out safely, effectively and acceptably. PMID: 25815823 [PubMed - in process]

Enteral tube feeding for dysphagic stroke patients.
Abstract Enteral feeding tubes, a nasogastric tube (NGT) or percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG), are commonly used to provide nutrition, hydration and essential medications to stroke patients who cannot swallow. Early tube feeding is associated with improved survival after stroke and it is recommended that patients start tube feeding within 24 hours of hospital admission. NGT feeding is the preferred method for short-term feeding in the acute phase of stroke as it has the advantage of being easily placed at the bedside. However, there are often difficulties inserting the NGT and it can be easily dislodged by...

Effects of nasogastric catheterization in patients with stroke and dysphagia.
This study aimed to analyze the effects of gastric intubation in patients with stroke and dysphagia. A systematic literature review was performed in six databases, using the keywords stroke and intubation, gastrointestinal. One hundred and twenty studies were found, from which three clinical trials were selected. The results showed different outcomes, including: increased serum albumin level (gastrostomy), poor prognosis and risk of death (gastrostomy), increased treatment failures because of blocking, displacement and reinsertion need of the nasogastric tube, and increased incidence of gastrointestinal bleeding (nasogastr...
