Increased risk of cardiovascular events in end-stage renal disease patients with osteoporosis: a nationwide population-based cohort study
Conclusions The results showed that osteoporosis was significantly associated with the subsequent risk of cardiovascular events in patients with ESRD. When encountering patients with ESRD and osteoporosis, physicians should be alert to the subsequent cardiovascular risk in incident dialysis patients to prevent the subsequent occurrence of these adverse events.

Comparative evaluation of cardiovascular outcomes in patients with osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis on recommended doses of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs
Conclusion: From the analysis conducted, it appears that the risk for cardiovascular events in arthritis patients on licensed doses of NSAIDs varies considerably and is likely to depend on the individual compound.

History of cardiovascular disease and cardiovascular biomarkers are associated with 30-day mortality in patients with hip fracture
ConclusionPreexisting CVD was associated with increased 30-day mortality after a hip fracture. Furthermore, high levels of NT-proBNP and low levels of HDL cholesterol were associated with increased 30-day mortality.

Increased Complications in Octogenarians Undergoing Same-Day Discharge following Total Knee Arthroplasty: A Matched Cohort Analysis
J Knee Surg DOI: 10.1055/s-0042-1743227Same-day discharge pathways in total knee arthroplasty (TKA) are gaining popularity as a means to increase patient satisfaction and reduce overall costs, but these pathways have not been thoroughly evaluated in potentially at-risk populations, such as in patients ≥80 years old. The purpose of this study was to compare 90-day complications and mortality following same-day discharge after primary TKA in patients ≥80 years old and those <80 years old. Patients who underwent unilateral primary TKA, were discharged on postoperative day 0, and had a minimum 90-day follow-up were iden...

Dedicated Orthopaedic Operating Rooms: Beneficial to Patients and Providers Alike
Objective: Dedicated orthopaedic operating rooms (DOORs) are increasingly popular solutions to reducing after-hours procedures, physician fatigue, and elective schedule disruptions. Although the benefits to surgeons are well understood, there are comparatively few studies that explore the effects of DOORs on patient care. We compared treatments and outcomes for all consecutive patients with femoral neck fractures, 4 years before and 4 years after implementation of a DOOR-based schedule. Design: Retrospective case–control study. Setting: Level 1 academic trauma center. Patients: A total of 111 consecutive trauma patients ...

Medical morbidities in people following hip and knee arthroplasty: data from the Osteoarthritis Initiative
Conclusions People who undergo THA or TKA may present with a variety of medical morbidities. Accordingly consideration should be made on how to encourage the adoption and maintenance of physical activity and healthy lifestyle choices for this population.

Predictors of 30-day mortality following hip/pelvis fractures
Discussion Several preoperative patient risk factors and postoperative complications greatly increased the odds for patient mortality following 30-days after initial surgery. Orthopaedic surgeons can utilize these predictive risk factors to better improve patient care. Level of evidence Retrospective study. Level IV.

Medical Complications After Adult Spinal Deformity Surgery: Incidence, Risk Factors, and Clinical Impact
Conclusion. Risk factors for the development of postoperative medical complications after correction of ASD include smoking, hypertension, and duration of symptoms. Patients who have one or more of these risk factors should be identified and informed during informed consent of their increased risks. They should be optimized preoperatively, and followed closely during the postoperative period. Level of Evidence: 3

Does the degree of beach chair position during shoulder arthroscopy affect cerebral oxygenation? A prospective comparative study
Conclusions: No significant difference was noted in regional cerebral oxygen saturation between patients operated on in the beach chair position and those operated on in the semi-upright sitting position. A direct relation was noted between the decrease in mean arterial pressure and decrease in cerebral oxygen saturation.

30-Day adverse events, length of stay and re-admissions following surgical management of pelvic/acetabular fractures
ConclusionPatients with ASA grade > II, greater co-morbidity burden and prolonged operative times were likely to experience adverse events and have a longer length of stay. Surgeons can utilize this data to risk stratify patients so that appropriate pre-operative and post-operative medical optimization can take place.
