Functional outcomes among stroke patients in Alagoas, Brazil: observational study
CONCLUSION: We found a FD rate four times greater than in another Brazilian study. Lower stroke severity and fewer depressive symptoms were associated with achieving functional independence. Less than half of the patients were referred to a rehabilitation service at hospital discharge and few had access to multidisciplinary treatment.PMID:33729419 | DOI:10.1590/1516-3180.2020.0304.R2.10122020

Brain Function Changes Induced by Intermittent Sequential Pneumatic Compression in Patients with Stroke as Assessed by Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy
CONCLUSIONS: The significantly increased WA values in the frequency intervals III, IV, and V in the MC of patients with ischemic stroke might be related to cortical activity in the MC in addition to increased cerebral perfusion. The decreased LI values in the prefrontal cortex and MC indicated that the ISPC may have had a positive effect on the functional rehabilitation of these regions.IMPACT: This study provides a method for assessing the effects of ISPC on cerebral oscillations, and the results benefit the optimization of ISPC parameters in personalized treatment for the functional recovery of patients with stroke.PMID:...

The Effect of Robotic Assisted Gait Training With Lokomat ® on Balance Control After Stroke: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
Conclusions: Overall, most studies have shown beneficial effects of Lokomat® on balance recovery for stroke survivors, at least comparable to conventional physical therapy. However, due to the limited number of studies and their high heterogeneity, further research is needed to draw more solid and definitive conclusions.

IJERPH, Vol. 18, Pages 8058: Influence of Physical Activity and Socio-Economic Status on Depression and Anxiety Symptoms in Patients after Stroke
a-Ciałowicz Stroke is a high-risk factor for depression. Neurological rehabilitation is greatly difficult and often does not include treatment of depression. The post-stroke depression plays an important role in the progress of treatment, health, and the life of the patient. The appropriate treatment of depression could improve the quality of life of the patient and their family. The study aimed to evaluate the impact of physical activity and socio-economic status of the patient on the effectiveness of recovery from depression and the severity of the symptoms of depression. The study was conducted with 40 patients aft...

Fluid Cognition Relates to Locomotor Switching in Neurotypical Adults, Not Individuals After Stroke
CONCLUSIONS: Individuals after stroke appear to have deficits in locomotor switching compared with neurotypical adults. The relationship between fluid cognition and locomotor switching was significant in neurotypical adults but not in individuals after stroke. Future work to understand the relationship between specific cognitive domains and locomotor switching is needed (see the Video, Supplemental Digital Content 1, available at: http://links.lww.com/JNPT/A361).PMID:34507340 | DOI:10.1097/NPT.0000000000000373

The Relationship between Strength of the Affected Leg and Walking Speed after Stroke Varies According to the Level of Walking Disability: A Systematic Review
CONCLUSION: After stroke, there is a strong relationship between strength of the affected leg and walking speed, with little variability across individual muscle groups. However, the level of walking disability of people with stroke does make a difference such that the more disabled people are, the stronger the relationship is between strength of the affected leg and walking speed.IMPACT: This study suggests that the strength of all muscles of the affected leg is important for walking after stroke. It appears that increasing strength in the affected leg could be most important in people that are more disabled.LAY SUMMARY: ...

Depressive Symptoms Moderate the Relationship among Physical Capacity, Balance Self-Efficacy, and Participation in People after Stroke
CONCLUSION: The results suggest the relationship between physical capacity and participation appears to be mediated by balance self-efficacy in individuals after stroke with low reports of depressive symptoms but in those with high reports of depressive symptoms, physical capacity and balance self-efficacy are unrelated to participation.IMPACT: Targeting balance self-efficacy to improve post stroke participation may only be beneficial for individuals with low reports of depression. In individuals after stroke with high reports of depression, treatment should include and emphasize the treatment of those depressive symptoms....
