Risk of Subsequent Events in Patients With Minor Ischemic Stroke or High-Risk Transient Ischemic Attack
This study aimed to present the prognosis after minor acute ischemic stroke (AIS) or transient ischemic attack (TIA), using a definition of subsequent stroke in accordance with recent clinical trials. In total, 9,506 patients with minor AIS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale ≤ 5) or high-risk TIA (acute lesions or ≥ 50% cerebral artery steno-occlusion) admitted between November 2010 and October 2013 were included. The primary outcome was the composite of stroke (progression of initial event or a subsequent event) and all-cause mortality. The cumulative incidence of stroke or death was 11.2% at 1 month, 13.3% a...

Stroke incidence and cognitive outcomes of intracranial atherosclerotic stenosis: study protocol for a multicenter, prospective, observational cohort study
This study will establish a large prospective ICAS cohort, hopefully discover new biomarkers associated with vulnerable intracranial plaques, identify subjects at high risk for incident ischemic stroke or cognitive impairment, and eventually propose a precise diagnostic and treatment strategy for ICAS population.TRIAL REGISTRATION: Chinese Clinical Trials Register ChiCTR2200061938.PMID:36111049 | PMC:PMC9469171 | DOI:10.21037/atm-22-3570

Intracranial Arterial Calcifications: Potential Biomarkers of Stroke Risk and Outcome
Front Neurol. 2022 Sep 1;13:900579. doi: 10.3389/fneur.2022.900579. eCollection 2022.ABSTRACTIntracranial artery calcifications (IAC), a common and easily identifiable finding on computed tomorgraphy angiography (CTA), has gained recognition as a possible risk factor for ischemic stroke. While atherosclerosis of intracranial arteries is believed to be a mechanism that commonly contributes to ischemic stroke, and coronary artery calcification is well-established as a predictor of both myocardial infarction (MI) and ischemic stroke risk, IAC is not currently used as a prognostic tool for stroke risk or recurrence. This revie...

Age and composition of the thrombus retrieved by mechanical thrombectomy from patients with acute ischemic stroke are associated with revascularization and clinical outcomes
CONCLUSION: Thrombus composition correlated with revascularization and clinical outcomes. The composition of an acute ischemic thrombus may reflect the pathophysiology of stroke and influence treatment efficacy.PMID:36126564 | DOI:10.1016/j.thromres.2022.09.004

Ischemic stroke in young patients in Medell ín, Colombia
CONCLUSIONS: The high frequency of traditional risk factors in young patients highlights the need to optimize primary and secondary prevention plans. This study provides new insights about the relevance of illicit substance abuse in Colombia as a cause of stroke in young patients, unlike the previous one conducted in Bogotá. Infectious causes were other peculiarities found. It is necessary to investigate the reasons for the high proportion of undetermined causes.PMID:36138366 | DOI:10.1186/s12883-022-02895-9

Dual vs. mono antiplatelet therapy for acute ischemic stroke or transient ischemic attack with evidence of large artery atherosclerosis
CONCLUSION: In patients with symptomatic large artery extracranial or intracranial atherosclerosis, DAPT was superior to MAPT in preventing IS recurrence without increasing bleeding risks. The optimal DAPT regimens and duration of treatment in this population need to be clarified in further studies.PMID:36172029 | PMC:PMC9510375 | DOI:10.3389/fneur.2022.923142

Carotid Plaque Characteristics Predict Recurrent Ischemic Stroke and TIA: The PARISK (Plaque At RISK) Study
CONCLUSIONS: IPH and total plaque volume are independent risk factors for recurrent ipsilateral ischemic stroke or TIA in patients with mild-to-moderate carotid stenosis. These plaque characteristics improve current decision making. Validation studies to implement plaque characteristics in clinical scoring tools are needed. (PARISK: Validation of Imaging Techniques [PARISK]; NCT01208025).PMID:36202450 | DOI:10.1016/j.jcmg.2022.04.003

Contribution of Common Genetic Variants to Risk of Early Onset Ischemic Stroke
DISCUSSION: The ABO locus, genetically predicted blood group A, and higher genetic propensity for venous thrombosis are more strongly associated with EOS than with LOS, supporting a stronger role of prothrombotic factors in EOS.PMID:36240095 | DOI:10.1212/WNL.0000000000201006
